A Little Bit About Me

I am a travel and nature photographer, writer, and educator. I live in the Florida Keys and on the road.

My lifelong interest in exploring remote locations has taken me around the globe, on land, and at sea. I have photographed palaces in Vienna and temples in Japan, penguins in the Antarctic and llamas in Peru, and countless landscapes on different continents. In the end, however, I'm always drawn back to the American continent and the sheer beauty and variety of its natural features. One of my favorite places is the surreal landscape of the southwestern United States with its intricate rock formations and wide, open landscape.

I became excited about the arts at an early age: I discovered my passion for color and light in art class in kindergarten. My love for photography started with my first camera when I was twelve years old and continued into high school. I signed up for the camera club and took every B&W workshop offered by our physics teacher. Already a relentless photographer, I kept at it in college by taking every photography class I could fit into my schedule. To this day, I continue the learning process and collaborate with other artists. There is so much that is new and exciting in photography every day – it never gets boring.

I grew up in Vienna, Austria. After an odyssey across four countries and seven US states, I have, for now,  settled in a small cottage in the Florida Keys in a historic town called Tavernier. My partner Steve and I have three cats, too many raccoons, and an ever-growing tropical shade garden. When I’m not on location with my camera, I love to read, write, paint, sail, snorkel, cook, and garden. Luckily, I’m able to continue to travel and have, in recent years, fallen in love with the Bahamian island of Eleuthera.

Artist Statement

I travel and explore out of a desire to understand the essence of the world around me. I get to a place that feels right and I step into the landscape, taking it all in, tasting it, feeling it, touching it, and becoming part of it. And then I see the image I will be taking. Only then, do I set up my camera and start shooting. Whether I’m on the road or hiking the backcountry, I look for places and moments that affect me, touch me, change me, and hopefully add to who I am. Because I feel these moments deeply and because they are magical and thrilling and fleeting, I want to grab them and hold on. Through my photography, I share what I see so that others can experience the same.

Prints & Workshops

Limited and open edition prints of my images are available online at carmenalex.com and at several locations throughout the Florida Keys. I offer digital photography workshops based on solid technical principles and with an emphasis on creativity. In addition, I lead photo tours to Hawaii, the Southwest, Florida, and Vienna, Austria.
