    Blue Hills Valley, Utah

I'd heard of the Blue Hills for years but wasn't able to find the right spot until my third try. It's an amazing place to watch the sunrise from. The dark valley below slowly comes into blue focus as the light comes up.

    Blue Hills After Sunrise, UT

The hills are still blue but the early sunlight forces an ochre tone over the eastern slopes. It's another surreal scape on the Colorado Plateau.

Just after sunset, the coastal haze settled over Badwater and painted the landscape.

The sun isn't up, yet, but there is enough light to realize I'm looking straight down. There is nothing to provide scale - is it a thousand foot drop? More? I've no idea.

  • Horseshoe Bend I

    Horseshoe Bend I

Sunrise at stunning Horseshoe Bend is always a magical experience. The Colorado river meanders along between Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon and has carved its way through the local sandstone over millions of years. I like to come quite early to see the spectacle of the far cliffs turn golden as the sun slowly breaks the horizon. The light and therefore the colors are never the same here and the view changes quite a bit from different angles along the cliff. This is the most scenic river bend I know and one of my all time favorite landscapes.

Once the mud dries after lots of heavy rains, it does some cool stuff. #mudcurls

    Paria Canyon, Utah

The Paria River has cut through some spectacular sedimentary rocks. The first time I came here, I got stuck in the mud in Buckskin Gulch. I never made it into Paria Canyon but was close enough to get an idea of what there is. I finally made it back here and just watched in awe as the the setting sun created rainbow colors on the rock faces.

    White Pocket, maybe Arizona

What can I say, you've either been here or you never will. I still don't know where this place is and I've discovered some remote landscapes. For me, White Pocket wins "hardest to find location". Ever.

    Fire to the Sky

Antelope Canyon is one of my favorite places to make images. It's also one of the most difficult places to work at due to the limited amount of light, high contrast scenes, and confined space. Add a slew of tourists most of the time to the mix and it becomes quite a challenge to shoot here. Once you're inside, however, none of that matters. It's a pleasure to just stand and turn and look up at the cliffs that range in color from orange to maroon and burgundy to sometimes a deep purple. Antelope creek has cut a string of narrow canyons into the Navajo Sandstone formation and continues to deepen the slots every time it rains either locally or upstream. These popular canyons are all on Navajo Nation land and are somewhat restricted in access. A Navajo guide is required at all times.
